Bitcoin, declared by some as a revolutionar y new cur rency and a risky investment by others, has been the subject of debate for over a decade now. While many people, both young and old, have rushed to become part of the Bitcoin trend, many are yet still unfamiliar with what cryptocurrencies are. Regard- less of their future success or failure, as Bitcoin and other cryptocurren- cies will inevitably be a part of our future, it is important that we know how these currencies work. Cryptocurrencies are purely on- line currencies that are created and secured using cr yptography and blockchain technology. Cryptog- raphy allows significantly more se- cure encryption of information and blockchain technology stores data in a decentralized way, allowing all users access to information, making the data entered immutable. All physical money is printed by national governments. However, due to the nature of cryptocurren- cies, this is not applicable. These currencies are created in a much different manner-“mining”in the case of Bitcoin.“Miners,”are paid to create more Bitcoin via verifying transactions. By verifying 1 Mega- byte’s worth of Bitcoin transactions, miners are paid. Now t hat we’ve covered t he how, it’s time to get into the why. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts claim that it is the currency of the future. They believe that Bitcoin-like cur- rencies are secure investments due to their system. The security of the currencies also entails that banks and governments cannot regulate or interfere with them. However, there are characteristics of cryptocur- rencies that also dissuade people from purchasing them. The primary characteristic is its instability. Un- like paper currencies, which vary s l i g h t l y i n e x c h a n g e r a t e s d e - pend i ng on the time and date, cr yp- t o c u r r e n- cies fluctuate a s mu c h a s s t o c k s d o . Bi tcoi n, for example, was valued at just 10,000 USD per coin in October 2020. It spiked to a peak of 60,000 USD in March then dropped all the way down to 35,000 in June. Though similar to stocks in volatility, cryp- tocurrencies are not investments. Money is gained only by buying and selling the cryptocurrency itself. Furthermore, cryptocurrencies have been the subject and method of many crimes. This includes hacking to steal millions of dollars worth of money and activities such as money laundering and fraud. Regardless of whether cryptocur- rencies are revolutionary or a fool- ish investment, it is undeniable that it has a large impact on the global economy. One clear effect is the one on the tech industry. Like in a gold rush, people are scrambling to obtain the necessary equipment to start the mining process. Com- panies like AMD and NVIDIA are profiting greatly from the expensive computers the process demands. Cr y p tocu r renc i e s a re l i kewi s e gaining in monetary value. Cryp- tocurrencies are estimated at a total of about $1.5 billion dollars, with Bitcoin comprising about 60% of the total value. Whether cryptocur- rencies are legitimate investments or not, they still hold irrefutable mon- etary value. RayKim,StudentIntern (ChattahoocheeHighSchool)
