The 20th anniversary of the tragic events of September 9th, 2001 sig- nals the end of the U.S.’s involve- ment in the war in Afghanistan. The longest war in the history of the United States, the War on Terrorism, is to finally come to an end. How- ever, the end of the war does not mean a victor or even a treaty has been agreed upon. While the end of the war benefits the United States, the same may not be true for Af- ghanistan and its neighbors. The war was instigated by Al- Qaeda’s attacks on the U.S. World Trade Center and Pentagon, cost- ing the lives of thousands. George W. Bush, the president at the time, declared a“War on Terrorism”and implemented measures to elimi- nate the terrorist group. Though the leader of Al-Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, was finally killed in 2005, only a small portion of the war’s mission had been accomplished. The Taliban, a massive organization based in Afghanistan and Pakistan proved to be a difficult opponent. The organization, like many others in the area, wished to control ar- eas in the Middle East under Islamic Law, using tactics like terrorism and coersion to do so. America, along with NATO allies, suppor ted the Afghanistan military and sent sol- diers of their own to combat Taliban forces to little avail. In fact, the Tal- iban controls more land than before the war. Despite often fruitless efforts, the U.S. has invested substantial money in Afghanistan. The figure lies at $2.3 trillion U.S. Dollars as of 2021 according to the Costs of War Proj- ect. This includes over 900 billion in operations alone, over 500 bil- lion in interest, about 300 trillion in veterans’care, and over 400 billion in base improvements. This does not include future interest payments as we l l a s f u- t u re ve te r- ans’benefits p a y m e n t s . The decision to completely r e m o v e for ce s f rom Afghanistan will substan- tially lift the financial burden on the U.S. Gov- ernment and help alleviate future debt. But what does America’s de- cision mean for Afghanis tan? A complete pullout of soldiers, de- spite promises of financial support, may spell disaster for the unstable countr y. The U.S.’s occupancy has led to massive increases in life expectancy and much progress in equality and democracy. On top of doubled mortality rates during childbirth, life expectancy increased by over 10 years and significant number s of women voter s par- ticipated in elections. To allow the Taliban control over the country’ s future may unwind two decades’ worth of progress almost entirely. A U.S. intelligence assessment of the situation predicted that the major- ity of Afghanistan could fall un- der Taliban control in merely two years after America’s departure. This means in just a few years, Af- ghanistan could become an Islamic state formed under a terrorist re- gime. Any traces of democracy and equality will be wiped out. So the question remains. Should America look to preserve itself and alleviate part of its accumulated debt or should it reengage in a two- decade year old war, most likely investing trillions of dollars and thousands of American lives?
