2021년 7월 24일 (토요일) E6 교육 The Value of the Preservation of an Activity Slowly Fading The act of reading has significantly depreciated over the years due to a plethora of replacements modern technology has introduced. It has been slowly fading away from our daily ac- tivities, with few concerned for its pos- sible impending demise. From media to entertainment to communication, the act of reading has substantially de- clined. Once widely thought of as the act of reading a newspaper, our view of keeping up with the news has changed over the years. Reading the news has become watching the news. Why take time to read about notable events when you can simply listen to the same in- formation while driving? Convenience and comfort have been the two themes of modern living. Everything is de- signed- or is being designed- to save time and effort. Though this approach is not necessarily detrimental, it dis- courages reading as it tends to be more time consuming. Reading is no longer a popular pas- time. It has been long since replaced with electronic forms of entertain- ment, including computers, phones, consoles, and television. Even books themselves have been replaced by electronic copies. These changes are especially applicable to the youth. Most of themhave grown upwith video games and television as their primary sources of entertainment, and even those who have read books as children often neglect them. Previously, school mandated books were usually a way students were exposed to reading, even if it was only a small amount. Now with a plethora of online sources summa- rizing plots and key ideas students no longer feel an urge to read asmuch. But what reading offers cannot be found elsewhere. It directly educates on compre- hension, artic- ulation, writ- ing, and history among count- less benefits. A clear example is standardized te s t i ng . The SAT and ACT reading comprehension and gram- mar sections consist of various writing and reading related problems. Those that have much experience read- ing will report that they required far less study time for a far better score. I can personally attest to this. Reading thousands of novels throughout my life has allowed me to be able to read and understand passages far more quickly and accurately than those who have had limited experience in literature. Within just a couple practice tests, I was able to score an 800 onmy reading and writing section on my first official SAT test. Others with extensive read- ing experience will often report similar results. But reading goes beyond just al- lowing one to do better academically. It teaches better public speaking via the formation of comprehensive sen- tences. It teaches one to grasp hidden meanings in a variety of situations. It teaches a better understanding of the chronology of events. It teaches the importance of setting. Reading is so much more than something we consider merely an aca- demic activity. These values and ben- efits are presented today in hopes of raising awareness for its preservation and common use.
